The country behind the residence option

Why Portugal? Start with the life you want.

Portugal combines an Atlantic location with membership of the European Union, the euro area and Schengen. A Portuguese residence option can support a future home, time with your family or a base for part of the year. The right question is how well the country fits your plans.

A Portuguese permit gives residence rights in Portugal; travel within Schengen follows the applicable rules. It does not automatically give residence or work rights in every EU country.

Court type changes the timeline

263 days for first-instance civil and commercial cases; 858 days for administrative and tax cases, using 2024 disposition-time data.

European Commission · Portugal Country Report 2026

Read the indicators correctly. Peace measures more than crime. Life expectancy does not promise fast access to care: the health profile also reports that 15% lack an assigned NHS family doctor. PISA describes 15-year-olds nationally, not a particular school. Bathing-water quality covers monitored coastal sites and is not a real-time swimming advisory. Investment stock is accumulated international investment, not fund returns. Fibre coverage is not a guarantee of service at every property.

Before your next step

The questions to answer before you commit

What do I receive from the Profiler and the guide?

The Profiler gives you an immediate planning summary based on your priorities, before you share contact details. The 15-page English guide covers the routes, family considerations, process, MFG support and an indicative budget. Enter your name and email and complete verification to unlock it. MFG records your request and may contact you about your Portugal plans; marketing updates are optional.

Can I keep my current home and still plan for Portugal?

The Golden Visa has a limited physical-presence requirement: seven days in the first year and fourteen days in each subsequent two-year period. You must also maintain the qualifying investment and meet permit and renewal conditions. Residence permission, tax residence and citizenship are separate questions. Your family circumstances, travel plans and tax position need individual review.

What should I check before committing to a fund?

Start with the underlying assets, manager concentration, fees, cash flows, possible losses and realistic exit terms. A fund eligible for the Golden Visa is not necessarily appropriate for your objectives. The Profiler identifies discussion points; it does not select a fund or allocation. Any return ranges shown are indicative MFG planning references after fund fees and expenses, before personal taxes and external Golden Visa costs. Capital repayment and returns are not guaranteed.

What changes if I am a US investor?

The fund route adds questions about your capital source, PFIC / QEF awareness, custodian or plan-provider review and US tax-adviser involvement. These help prepare the specialist discussion. US tax treatment and any proposed retirement-account structure require separate professional validation; the Profiler does not recommend a transfer, rollover or account structure.

What happens when I request a personal review?

MFG reviews the information you share and responds by email with personalized next steps by the date shown before submission: the next business day in Portugal. The introductory discussion confirms your objectives, family scope, timing and the work needed. Detailed investment analysis, legal eligibility checks and the application process follow the scope agreed with you.

What does your all-inclusive Golden Visa service cost?

Our fixed, all-inclusive service fee is €5,000 for one investor, a couple, or up to two people, subject to the applicable Golden Visa eligibility requirements. It includes NIF assistance, bank-account setup support, financial and investment analysis, investment coordination, and legal support for your Golden Visa application through your first residence card. Government charges are not included. The required investment or cultural contribution is separate from the service fee. For additional family members, request a personalized quote. Your written proposal confirms the scope before you commit.

How is MFG Consultants compensated?

MFG receives fees from clients and remuneration from fund managers. Before you commit, we explain these arrangements alongside the service scope, costs, risks and alternatives relevant to your case.
