The questions behind the allocation
Underlying businesses, concentration and manager exposure.
Decision rights, oversight and incentives.
Cash flows, fund extensions and repayment conditions.
Eligibility, documentation and family objectives.
Start with the framework
A fund must satisfy the legal route requirements. Your portfolio must also make sense for your circumstances. We examine both.
In eligible Portuguese non-real-estate collective investment undertakings. Budget separately for fees and other costs.
A fund’s maturity requirement is not a promise of repayment in year five. Read its actual term and extension provisions.
At least 60% of the investment value must be in commercial companies headquartered in Portugal.
Look through the strategy to the underlying activity. A sector label alone does not establish eligibility.
Requirements checked on 12 October 2026 against AIMA’s ARI guidance ↗. Confirm current fund and applicant eligibility with qualified Portuguese legal professionals before subscribing.
Check the fund and manager’s regulatory status, the evidence supporting Golden Visa eligibility and the investment merits. CMVM supervision does not guarantee returns, liquidity or repayment.

A compelling presentation is the beginning of a review. The quality of a decision rests on the documents, assumptions and unanswered questions behind it.
Holdings, pipeline, sector limits, geography, borrowing and related-party exposure.
What risks am I adding to the assets I already own?
Fund rules, decision rights, manager commitment, conflicts policy, independent oversight and investor reporting.
Who can act, who checks the decisions and whose interests come first?
Debt seniority, security where applicable, leverage, concentration and downside scenarios.
Where could a loss arise, and what protections actually apply?
Subscription and management fees, operating expenses, performance fees, distribution waterfall and realised track record.
What reaches the investor after costs, and how much of the evidence is realised?
Fund term, extension rights, transfer restrictions, distribution policy and plausible buyers for underlying assets.
When might cash be returned, and what happens if the exit takes longer?
Current subscription documents, manager declarations, banking evidence and legal assessment of the proposed route.
Can the investment and residency steps be documented and coordinated correctly?
We compare the evidence using a consistent framework, make trade-offs explicit and identify what still needs clarification before a decision.

Funds in our working universe.
A common analytical framework.
Broad coverage creates room for comparison. Your circumstances determine the shortlist.
Breadth with purpose
MFG Consultants works with more than 90 different funds. We apply the same analytical lens across portfolios, considering strategy, risk, costs, liquidity, governance and your objectives.
The working universe is broader than the selection appropriate for any individual client. Current availability, subscription terms and Golden Visa eligibility must be confirmed for each fund.
Several funds can share the same sector, financing conditions or exit risks. Diversification requires looking through the labels to the underlying exposures.
Our remuneration combines client advisory fees and arrangements with fund managers. We explain the applicable fees and commercial arrangements before you proceed, alongside the scope and ongoing support.
Match the strategy to the investor
Capital preservation, income and growth are objectives, not guarantees. A strategy label cannot tell you enough about a fund’s actual risk.
Assess credit quality, seniority, collateral where relevant, leverage and concentration. Income-oriented or secured strategies can still incur losses.
Ask: What happens if cash flows weaken or security takes time to enforce?
Compare how operating businesses, income and growth exposures interact. More holdings or managers do not automatically produce meaningful diversification.
Ask: Could the portfolio’s main positions be affected by the same event?
Private equity, venture capital and thematic strategies can rely on business execution, further funding and future buyers. Valuations and exit timing deserve close attention.
Ask: What evidence supports the growth assumptions and the proposed exit?
Review whether expected payments come from operating cash flow, borrowing, asset sales or returned capital. Distribution targets are not contractual certainty.
Ask: Is the payment sustainable, and how does it affect the remaining investment?

Sector exposure is not an eligibility endorsement. Each investment must satisfy the route’s restrictions.Use the Profiler to organise your objectives before your first conversation.
Plan beyond the subscription
Your investment amount, total budget and access to cash are different numbers. Put them on the same page before signing.
Request a complete schedule covering subscription charges, management fees, fund expenses, performance fees and exit or transfer charges where applicable. Check which costs are paid separately and which reduce the fund’s value.
Allow for government and professional fees, banking and custody, document preparation, translations, renewals and family members. Ask for a written proposal showing what is included and what is charged separately.
Assess tax residence, the fund’s legal classification, currency exposure and reporting obligations with your tax advisers. A Portuguese investment can have consequences in your home jurisdiction.
Investment timeline
Read the fund’s term, extension powers and transfer rules. Cash may return gradually; a sale may take longer than expected and capital may be lost.
Residency timeline
Processing, eligibility and any eventual permanent residency or citizenship application follow their own rules. Coordinate any redemption or transfer with your legal advisers.
The two timelines need coordination. A residence milestone does not create a right to withdraw from a fund.

Questions investors ask
Practical answers to the questions that matter when selecting and structuring a Golden Visa fund investment.
Discuss your circumstances ↗They are investment vehicles used for the qualifying fund route, subject to specific legal requirements. Your money is invested according to the fund’s mandate, with returns and risks linked to its underlying assets. The manager makes investment decisions within those rules; your review should establish how the strategy, governance and exit provisions work.
AIMA’s guidance permits units in multiple qualifying funds. The structure still needs to meet the applicable requirements. Assess each fund’s minimum subscription, costs, underlying exposure and documentation before deciding on the allocation.
There is no universal “right” number of funds. One diversified fund can hold many businesses; several funds can still share concentrated risks.
A fund can be appropriate for one investor and unsuitable for another. Assess its role within your existing wealth, your ability to tolerate losses and illiquidity, the fees and your residency plans. MFG Consultants compares the options against your profile using a consistent framework.
No general guarantee applies. A target IRR is an assumption-based performance objective, not a promised annual payment. Compare net and gross figures, realised and unrealised performance, distribution timing and the treatment of fees. You may receive less than you invested.
Not automatically. Withdrawal depends on the fund rules, available liquidity and any transfer or redemption restrictions. Extensions and the sale of underlying assets may delay distributions. Your legal advisers should also confirm the effect of any change on your residency position before you act.
Before requesting redemption or transferring fund units, investors should assess how the fund's exit provisions interact with their current ARI status, investment-maintenance obligations and any pending application for permanent residence.
Portugal Golden Visa Fund Maturity: When Can You Exit Without Losing Residence?
The manager follows the fund’s rules for realising investments, settling liabilities and distributing proceeds. Sales, refinancing or other exits may occur at different times. Review extension powers and distribution priorities. Full capital repayment is not assured.
Request the current fund rules or offering documents, subscription agreement, applicable investor information document, full fee schedule, available audited financial statements, portfolio and performance reporting, and documentation supporting Golden Visa eligibility. Ask how valuation, conflicts, extensions and transfers are handled.
MFG Consultants combines client advisory fees with remuneration from fund managers. We work with more than 90 different funds and apply a common analytical framework. Commission levels do not determine the options we put forward. The applicable fees, commercial arrangements and service scope are explained before you proceed.
Coverage, analytical methods, investor assumptions and commercial arrangements can differ. Ask each adviser to explain the selection criteria, alternatives considered, excluded options, fees and conflicts. A transparent rationale makes recommendations easier to compare.
Yes. Our independent fund review service provides a way to examine a proposed fund’s structure, costs, risks and exit terms. Share the current documents and your objectives so we can confirm the scope of the review.
No. The investment is one part of a wider legal process. Applicant requirements, evidence and decisions by the authorities still apply. Citizenship is a separate legal outcome. MFG Consultants coordinates the agreed work and keeps you informed; administrative decisions and processing times remain outside our control.
