INDEPENDENT INVESTMENT & RESIDENCY ADVISORY
A Golden Visa fund can qualify.
That does not make it a good investment.
MFG Consultants is a Portugal-based independent advisory firm working with international investors and families since 2012.
We do not represent a single fund or investment strategy. We review the Portuguese Golden Visa investment market and help clients select and combine investments according to risk, expected return, liquidity, time horizon and portfolio objectives.
The residence permit is the framework.
Your €500,000 is still an investment.
INDEPENDENT
No single-fund model.
We assess the market before recommending an allocation.
INVESTMENT-LED
Fund selection starts with your investor profile, not immigration eligibility.
PORTUGAL-BASED
Investment and residency execution coordinated locally by one advisory team.

BEYOND A LIST OF ELIGIBLE FUNDS
Nearly 90 qualifying Portuguese funds reviewed.
Your portfolio only needs the right ones.
Eligibility is the starting point, not the investment decision.
Portuguese Golden Visa funds differ materially in strategy, risk, fees, liquidity, maturity, expected return and exit structure. MFG reviews the available market and builds an allocation around the investor, rather than asking the investor to choose from a list.
01 — DEFINE YOUR PROFILE
We start with your objectives, risk tolerance, return expectations, liquidity needs and investment horizon.
02 — REVIEW THE MARKET
We compare qualifying strategies across private equity, corporate debt, infrastructure, energy, hospitality, venture capital and other eligible investments.
03 — MODEL THE ALLOCATION
We assess different combinations and model how capital can be allocated across strategies, managers and risk profiles.
04 — BUILD THE PORTFOLIO
One fund where appropriate. Several where diversification makes sense. The structure follows your profile, not a product catalogue.
PORTFOLIO DESIGN
Same €500,000.
Three very different investors.
The Golden Visa requirement may be the same. The investment objective rarely is.
DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
DIFFERENT PRIORITIES.
A STRONGER OUTCOME.

CAPITAL PRESERVATION
Greater emphasis on defensive strategies, income visibility and downside control, with diversification used to reduce concentration risk.

BALANCED
A diversified mix of defensive and growth strategies designed to balance capital protection with long-term return potential.

GROWTH
Greater exposure to private markets and growth-oriented strategies, accepting higher risk and a longer investment horizon in pursuit of stronger returns.

BEFORE CAPITAL IS COMMITTED
A qualifying fund is only the beginning.
Before recommending any allocation, MFG reviews the investment itself, the manager behind it and how the fund fits the client’s broader objectives.
Manager Quality
Track record, governance, team stability, decision-making process and alignment with investors.
Fees and Economics
Management fees, subscription costs, performance fees and how much of the return is ultimately retained by the investor.
Risk and Return
Downside risk, return potential, volatility, leverage and whether the expected return compensates for the risk taken.
Underlying Assets
What the fund actually owns, concentration risk, sector exposure and the quality of the underlying portfolio.
Liquidity and Exit
Fund maturity, redemption mechanics, realistic exit timing and what happens if capital is needed earlier than expected.
Portfolio Fit
How the fund interacts with the rest of the allocation and whether it improves or concentrates the investor’s overall risk.
We do not ask whether a fund qualifies.
We ask whether it deserves a place in your portfolio.

ALTERNATIVE TO THE FUND ROUTE
What if you don’t want a fund?
For investors whose main objective is European residency rather than investment return, Portugal also offers a qualifying cultural contribution route from €200,000, subject to project eligibility and availability.
No investment risk: a fixed €200,000 contribution, no fund performance, no liquidity risk and no exit to manage.
Lower Capital Commitment
Qualifying cultural contributions can start from €200,000, substantially below the €500,000 required for the investment fund route.
No Liquidity or Exit
There is nothing to redeem or sell later. Once the qualifying contribution is made, there is no investment exit to manage.
Built for Simplicity
For investors who do not want €500,000 tied to funds, this can be the most straightforward route to Portuguese residency.
No Investment Exposure
This is a contribution, not an investment. There is no market performance, fund manager or portfolio risk to monitor during the programme.
Clear Cost From Day One
The contribution is non-refundable, but the economics are simple: you know the cost of obtaining the Golden Visa from the outset.
Same Residency Objective
The investment route and the cultural route use different capital structures, but both can provide access to the Portuguese Golden Visa and its long-term residency pathway.
You are not choosing between a “better” and a “worse” route.
You are choosing between investing €500,000 with potential return and committing a lower amount with no investment, liquidity or exit to manage.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
Straight answers. No guesswork.
The questions we hear most from international investors considering the Portuguese Golden Visa.
“What actually happens after five years?” The Golden Visa does not have to remain your permanent residence structure. After five years as a temporary resident, and provided the applicable requirements are met, you may apply for permanent residence in Portugal. This gives investors a route beyond the temporary Golden Visa structure without requiring them to relocate permanently to Portugal. Permanent residence has its own requirements, including basic Portuguese language knowledge.
“Did Portugal change the Golden Visa?” The Golden Visa itself remains in place. Portugal changed the eligible investment routes in 2023, removing real estate, and changed its nationality rules in 2026. These are separate issues. The Golden Visa remains a residence-by-investment programme with a very low physical presence requirement, family reunification and a route to permanent residence.
“How much time do I actually need to spend in Portugal?” Very little. The current requirement is 7 days during the first year and 14 days during each subsequent two-year period. For investors who do not want to relocate their family or business, this is one of the main differences between Portugal and more traditional residence programmes.
“Do I have to move to Portugal?” No. You can maintain your home, career, business and day-to-day life elsewhere while holding Portuguese residence, provided you continue meeting the Golden Visa requirements. That flexibility is one of the main reasons international families use Portugal as a long-term European option rather than an immediate relocation plan.
“Will obtaining Portuguese residence change my tax residency?” Not by itself. A Portuguese residence permit and Portuguese tax residency are two different things. Whether you become tax resident depends on your actual circumstances, including where you live and the applicable tax rules. Simply holding a Golden Visa does not automatically make you Portuguese tax resident.
“Do I have to buy property?” No. Real estate stopped qualifying for new Golden Visa investments in 2023. Today, the most widely used investment route is through eligible regulated investment funds. Cultural investment or contribution structures are also available, alongside other qualifying routes.
“What if I don't want to invest in a fund?” You do not have to. Portugal also provides a cultural route starting at €250,000, with the statutory amount reduced by 20% for qualifying activity in low-density territories. Unlike a fund investment, a contribution has no investment return, liquidity or exit value. That can actually make it attractive to investors who prefer a clearly defined cost rather than investment exposure.
“Do I have to put the full €500,000 into one fund?” No. The €500,000 requirement does not mean placing all your capital into a single product. Where appropriate, we can structure the investment across several eligible funds, allowing exposure to different managers, strategies, sectors and risk profiles. That is an important distinction between choosing a Golden Visa investment and simply buying whichever fund happens to be presented first.
“What happens to my €500,000 while I wait?” It remains invested. But what happens economically depends entirely on the funds selected. Different funds can have very different approaches to capital preservation, growth, income, fees, liquidity and exit. We analyse those variables before capital is committed and can construct diversified portfolios rather than concentrating the entire €500,000 in one product. The residence decision and the investment decision should make sense independently.
“Do I have to keep the investment for five years?” While you continue renewing the Golden Visa on the basis of that investment, the qualifying investment must be maintained. After the five-year period, investors who qualify may move to a different residence status, such as permanent residence, rather than continuing indefinitely within the temporary Golden Visa structure. The important point is that the investment has a defined role in the residence strategy. It is not necessarily a lifetime commitment.
“Can my family benefit even if we have no intention of moving to Portugal today?” Yes. Qualifying family members can be included through family reunification, allowing the family to build a European residence option together while continuing to live elsewhere. For many families, the objective is not to move today. It is to have the legal option to move, study, work or reorganise their lives in Europe later if circumstances change.
“Can I work towards a Portuguese passport without moving my life to Portugal?” Potentially, yes. The Golden Visa allows investors to maintain legal residence in Portugal while complying with its low physical presence requirement. Under the nationality rules currently in force, naturalisation generally requires 10 years of legal residence for nationals of most countries, and 7 years for nationals of EU Member States and Portuguese-speaking countries, together with the other nationality requirements applicable at that time. This means you can maintain your life elsewhere while building Portuguese residence in parallel. Keep your life where it works. Build your European future in parallel.
“Is citizenship automatic?” No. A Golden Visa is a residence permit, not citizenship-by-investment. Portuguese citizenship requires a separate application and the applicant must satisfy the nationality requirements in force at the time, including the applicable residence period and other legal conditions. That distinction matters: the residence permit is the asset you acquire first. Citizenship is a possible future outcome, not something purchased with the investment.
“Is 2026 still a sensible time to apply?” That depends on what you are trying to achieve. If your objective is to move permanently to Europe immediately, there may be simpler and less capital-intensive residence routes. If your objective is different — maintaining your current life while adding European residence, mobility and a long-term option for your family, Portugal remains unusually flexible. The right question is therefore not simply whether the Golden Visa is “good”. It is whether it solves the problem you are actually trying to solve.
