Portugal Golden Visa After Brexit: When Is Residence Worthwhile for UK Families?

Reviewed 10 October 2026. A British passport generally supports short visits to Portugal, not an unrestricted right to establish residence there. Portugal's Golden Visa can be worth considering when a family needs a durable Portuguese residence option while retaining its home, company or career in the United Kingdom. The programme does not recreate EU citizenship or automatically remove entry rules elsewhere in Europe.

Start with the life you actually lead

A couple in Surrey who spend three weeks a year at their Algarve holiday home may have no need to invest in a Golden Visa. Visitor rights may already cover those trips.

Now consider the same couple planning retirement split between Britain and Portugal, with a child considering a Portuguese university or a parent needing longer-term family access. The question has changed: they may need the ability to live in Portugal, not simply visit.

The residence route deserves scrutiny only where that additional legal option has a meaningful use.

Brexit changed residence rights, not every travel right

British citizens generally have visa-free Schengen short-stay access up to 90 days in a rolling 180-day period, subject to entry rules. A Portuguese residence permit is a different legal permission.

Residence under the Portuguese ARI programme does not create the unrestricted right to settle in France, Germany or Spain. Family members have individual eligibility requirements, and education, work and tax rules differ by destination.

A British family should list the countries in which it may need to live, versus places it only expects to visit, before choosing a residence scheme.

Golden Visa flexibility without immediate relocation

According to AIMA's ARI FAQ, the minimum presence pattern is generally seven days in the initial year and fourteen days in later two-year periods. That can fit an investor who still manages a UK business.

However, the investment must remain qualifying and the applicant must meet document, renewal and family requirements. Physical presence is not a substitute for complete legal compliance. A residence permit must not be confused with UK or Portuguese tax residence, which are determined under their respective rules.

The nationality timetable deserves a separate decision

Portugal's 2026 nationality reform raised the general residence requirement for new UK national applicants to ten years, subject to other legal requirements and transitional cases. Statements promising a Portuguese passport in five years for all new British investors are inaccurate.

An investor should determine whether a residence benefit still makes sense if naturalisation is substantially further away. Do not assume that the fund's five-year minimum maturity, an AIMA renewal and a future nationality application are interchangeable dates.

Investing and buying a home are separate projects

The commonly used eligible non-real-estate fund route starts at €500,000. Residential property purchases no longer qualify as a new Golden Visa investment pathway. A family may choose to rent or buy a home separately for lifestyle reasons; that purchase does not replace the qualifying investment.

Cultural support can have a lower qualifying threshold but generally involves a non-recoverable contribution. A fund carries market risk and can lose money or retain capital longer than expected. Compare total family costs and investment liquidity before choosing the route.

Do children need their own review?

Yes. A teenager's dependency, education plans and age at the time of family procedures can materially affect available options. Residence rights for parents do not automatically solve admissions, fees or employment eligibility elsewhere in Europe. A Portuguese immigration lawyer should assess every intended family member before capital is committed.

What about UK taxes?

HMRC's Statutory Residence Test assesses UK residence based on facts, day counts and ties. A Portuguese card alone does not end UK tax obligations. Portugal also applies its own criteria, which may become relevant when a family actually relocates or maintains a habitual home there.

The 2025 UK reform replacing the old remittance basis with a new foreign income and gains regime is not an automatic tax advantage of a Golden Visa. Your personal circumstances determine whether that regime is relevant.

Is the expense justified?

Ask three questions: Would visitor rules already meet our plans? Which member of the family needs actual Portuguese residence? Can €500,000 remain invested without damaging our liquidity?

Where the answers point to ordinary holidays only, a Golden Visa may be poor value. Where Portuguese residence provides meaningful choice for future family life, a proper investment and legal comparison is warranted.

Frequently asked questions

Can a British citizen live in Portugal by owning a holiday property?

Property ownership does not by itself provide residence permission.

Does a Portuguese Golden Visa restore EU free movement?

No. It gives Portuguese residence rights, not EU nationality.

Can a British family keep working in the UK?

Yes in principle, provided it complies with the programme and separate tax rules.
