Reviewed 1 October 2026. A useful Golden Visa timetable separates the work you can schedule from government processing and investment liquidity. A single promise of 'approval in three months' hides those differences.

1. Preparation and investment execution

Confirm the family structure and route, organise documents, complete banking and source-of-funds checks, assess the investment and obtain the required evidence. The order matters: the investment evidence needed for the application must be available before a complete file can be submitted.

Ask the team for dependencies and responsibilities rather than a headline completion date. A document issued abroad, an unresolved name discrepancy or additional bank checks can move the preparation timetable. Confirm which steps can proceed in parallel.

2. AIMA processing and residence-card issuance

Submission, review, an appointment for document checks or biometrics, the decision and card issuance are distinct stages. Follow the current instructions and the actual notices for your case. A legal decision deadline should not be marketed as a guaranteed end-to-end delivery time.

Keep a record of submission references, payments, requests for further evidence and appointment notices. Do not book travel against an informal estimate. Ask what is pending, which authority or party is responsible and which action can move the file forward.

3. Permanent residence and nationality eligibility

Permanent residence may be available after the applicable five-year temporary-residence period, subject to the relevant conditions. It is a separate application and status, not an automatic replacement card on the fifth anniversary.

The nationality changes effective from 19 May 2026 introduced a general residence period of seven years for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries and EU Member States, and ten years for other nationals, together with additional requirements. The transitional rule for pending nationality proceedings should not be treated as a blanket exemption for every existing Golden Visa investor.

Have the legal team identify the applicable rules and residence-counting evidence for each applicant. Meeting the minimum period establishes only one part of eligibility; it does not include the time needed to process a nationality application.

The fund has a fourth clock

The fund route requires a minimum maturity of five years at the time of investment. That legal condition is not a promise of repayment at year five. Fund duration, extensions, asset sales, distributions and your immigration obligations must all be assessed before planning an exit.

A family may become eligible to apply for another residence status while capital remains invested. Conversely, a fund distribution does not establish that an investor can withdraw or change the qualifying investment without affecting ARI renewals.
