Start with a clear definition

What is the
Portugal Golden Visa?

The Portugal Golden Visa, officially the Autorização de Residência para Atividade de Investimento (ARI), is a residence-by-investment programme for eligible nationals of countries outside the EU and the other excluded jurisdictions.

A qualifying investment or contribution can support an application for Portuguese residence. Approval, renewals and family applications each have requirements. This is residence by investment (RBI), rather than citizenship purchased directly.

Residence today

A connection you can use.

Live and work in Portugal with a valid residence status, or maintain your main life abroad while meeting the programme’s obligations.

Flexibility along the way

You set the life plan.

Explore a second home, time with family, a later relocation or a European base. Match the route to a realistic plan for visits and ongoing administration.

A longer-term objective

Keep the future in view.

Permanent residence and citizenship are separate later applications. Plan the applicable eligibility requirements from the beginning.

Programme definition and rights: AIMA — investment residence. This page was reviewed on 13 October 2026.

Why Portugal

A place to enjoy now.
A place to belong over time.

Atlantic coastlines, historic cities, food and wine, and time outdoors: Portugal offers different ways to live within one country. The right location depends on how you will actually spend your time here.

City & coast

Consider Lisbon and the surrounding coast for a mix of urban life and the ocean; Porto and the north for a different pace, architecture and cultural setting.

Space & seasons

Explore the Algarve, the countryside or the islands around your interests. Climate and access vary by region, so visit in different seasons before choosing a home.

Your everyday priorities

Look beyond a holiday address: schools, healthcare providers, transport, flight connections and property upkeep belong in a family’s location brief.

Explore the regions with Portugal’s official tourism website ↗

A second home. An additional option.

Keep your life.
Add Portugal.

Your Golden Visa can be part of a wider family plan, even when Portugal is not your main home.

Imagine returning to your own place for extended visits, spending part of the year here or gradually exploring a future move. With valid Portuguese residence and travel documents, your stays in Portugal are governed by that residence status, rather than the ordinary tourist allowance.

A home can make that connection tangible. Buying or renting is optional and separate from the qualifying investment. MFG Consultants can connect property selection, legal due diligence, practical setup and ongoing management around your needs.

YOUR SECOND-HOME PLANFour checks

with a clear plan.

Residence
Keep permits, renewals and required visits in order.
Property
Budget separately: a home purchase does not qualify for today’s Golden Visa.
Tax
Review days spent here and whether a home is used as your habitual residence.
Travel
Distinguish time in Portugal from visits to other Schengen countries.

A second home does not automatically settle your tax status. The Portuguese rules include both a day-count test and a habitual-home test.

Choose the financial commitment

Two different routes.
One residency objective.

Investment funds and cultural contributions have different economics. Compare what you commit, what may be recovered, what can go wrong and what the route needs to achieve for your family.

Qualifying investment funds

€500,000

Invested capital, with investment risk.

  • Qualifying Portuguese non-real-estate collective investment undertakings.
  • At investment, a minimum five-year maturity and at least 60% of investments in Portuguese companies.
  • Potential distributions and return of capital depend on the actual strategy and documents.
  • Fees, liquidity, term extensions and loss scenarios require close examination.

Qualifying cultural contribution

€250,000 standard threshold

€200,000 where the qualifying low-density reduction applies.

  • Support eligible artistic production or national cultural heritage.
  • A non-refundable contribution, rather than a redeemable investment.
  • Project eligibility, the recipient and the supporting evidence matter.
  • No portfolio exit to manage; contribution and professional costs still need a complete budget.
Explore the cultural route ↗
What other investment activities can qualify?

The framework also includes job creation, qualifying scientific research and business-capital routes with employment requirements. Headline thresholds include 10 jobs, €500,000 for qualifying research, or €500,000 company capital combined with prescribed job creation or retention. These are distinct operating commitments, and any territorial reductions and detailed conditions require legal review.

Direct property acquisition and an ordinary capital transfer no longer qualify for new applications. None of the amounts on this page is an all-inclusive price.

Build my Golden Visa profile ↗

Start with your investor profile

The same threshold.
Different investment decisions.

Fund eligibility, investment quality and suitability for you are three separate questions. MFG Consultants compares opportunities across more than 90 funds using a common analytical framework.

Defensive priorities

Understand the downside.

For clients focused on capital preservation, examine underlying assets, leverage, cash-flow resilience and the actual protections in the documents. “Defensive” does not mean guaranteed.

Balanced priorities

Compare the exposures.

Explore how income-oriented and growth strategies interact. Multiple funds do not necessarily provide diversification if they share similar assets, managers or economic risks.

Growth priorities

Accept the trade-offs.

Private equity, venture and other growth exposures can involve a longer horizon, uncertain valuations and limited liquidity. Fit the risk to your capacity for loss.

Your personalised fund comparison and portfolio scenarios.

After the introductory meeting, MFG Consultants prepares a report around your profile, comparing strategy, costs, liquidity and exit terms. Illustrative combinations of three to five funds may be considered where appropriate; the number of funds follows the analysis. Confirm the agreed scope and delivery schedule with the team.

The 90+ figure describes our working universe, not a claim that every fund is available, eligible or appropriate for every client. Commission levels do not determine selection. MFG Consultants receives client fees and remuneration from fund managers; arrangements relevant to your case are explained before commitment. See our advisory framework ↗

Your investor and family rights

More than a card.
Understand what it enables.

Rights attach to the appropriate approved status. An investment, an application receipt or a pending renewal should not be treated as a universal travel document.

Live & work in Portugal

Residence holders can live in Portugal and access employment or self-employment under the applicable rules. Professional licensing and other sector requirements may still apply.

Bring eligible family members

Family reunification can cover a spouse or qualifying partner, children and other eligible dependants. Age, dependency, study and relationship evidence must be assessed individually.

Education & healthcare

Residence holders have rights of access under Portuguese law. Registration, admission, coverage and payment rules still apply; residence does not guarantee a school place or make every healthcare service free.

Travel within Schengen

A valid Portuguese residence permit and passport generally support short visits to other Schengen states for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This does not grant a general right to live or work throughout Europe.

The longer-term value of RBI

A possible Portuguese passport.
Flexibility along the way.

For many families, the attraction is the ability to maintain a qualifying Portuguese residence connection while continuing their established life abroad, and work towards citizenship if they meet the applicable requirements.

01 / Residence

Build the connection.

Obtain and maintain the Golden Visa, meet the investment and physical-presence requirements, and keep your family’s records and renewals current.

02 / Eligibility

Plan the next status.

Review permanent residence and nationality separately with your legal adviser. Each has its own residence, language and other requirements.

03 / Citizenship & passport

Complete the process.

Citizenship requires a separate application and decision. Once nationality is acquired and registered, the Portuguese identity-document and passport steps follow.

Current nationality rules matter more than a five-year slogan.

The changes effective from 19 May 2026 set the general naturalisation residence period at seven years for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries and EU Member States, and ten years for other nationalities. Other conditions include language and civic knowledge, relevant security requirements and means of subsistence. Transitional treatment and how residence periods count require case-specific legal review.

The Golden Visa’s limited-stay residence model is valuable flexibility; it is not a guarantee of nationality, an exemption from nationality requirements or a guaranteed passport date.

Plan my family’s longer-term pathway ↗

Plan the commitments as carefully as the benefits

Time. Tax. Total cost.
Three essential conversations.

A good plan should continue to work if your circumstances change or the process takes longer than expected.

Presence & processing

Keep the calendars separate.

The ARI model has limited physical-presence requirements. The regulatory minimum is seven days in the first year and 14 days in subsequent two-year periods. Have counsel confirm the precise period applicable to your permit and renewal. Application, biometrics, investment maturity and nationality are different timelines.

Tax residence

More than a day count.

Holding an immigration permit does not alone determine tax residence. Portuguese rules include more than 183 days in the relevant 12-month period, or a home indicating an intention to maintain and occupy it habitually. Cross-border treaties and your home-country obligations also matter.

Full family budget

See the complete commitment.

Separate invested capital or the contribution from government charges, legal and advisory work, fund fees, translations, certification, insurance, travel and renewals. Add property costs only if a home is part of your plan.

Presence source: ARI regulation, Article 65-C. Tax source: Portuguese Tax Authority — Article 16, tax residence. Tax regimes and reliefs are not automatic Golden Visa benefits. A tailored budget and legal review are more useful than a headline “all-in” price.

Questions international families ask

Understand the opportunity.
Know the conditions.

Clear answers before you commit capital or reorganise your family’s plans.

Can I use the Golden Visa as an additional residence option?

Yes, that can be a central planning objective. The ARI model allows a qualifying residence connection with limited required presence, so you can consider Portugal alongside your existing life abroad. Maintain the relevant status and obligations, and review the tax consequences of how you actually use Portugal.

Can I own a home and come to Portugal when I want?

You can buy or rent a home separately from the qualifying route. With valid Portuguese residence and travel documents, you can plan stays in Portugal under that status. Keep renewal and entry requirements in mind. Property ownership itself does not grant residence or qualify for a new Golden Visa.

Can the Golden Visa lead to a Portuguese passport without an immediate relocation?

It can form part of a longer-term citizenship plan while you maintain the Golden Visa’s limited-stay residence conditions. Citizenship remains a separate legal process with its own eligibility and evidence. A Portuguese passport follows the acquisition and registration of nationality; it is not issued simply because an investment has been held for a particular period.

Is Portuguese citizenship automatic after five years?

No. The nationality rules changed in May 2026. The general residence periods are now seven years for Portuguese-speaking-country and EU nationals, and ten years for other nationalities, with additional requirements and potentially relevant transitional rules. Your legal adviser should establish which rules and residence periods apply to you. Permanent residence is a different application.

Can my spouse, children and parents be included?

Family reunification may cover these relatives where the applicable relationship, age, dependency and other conditions are satisfied. It is not automatic coverage for every relative. Check each person’s eligibility and documentation early, particularly where children’s age or dependency may change during the process.

Can my family work, study and access healthcare?

Approved residence holders have rights under Portuguese law, including access to work, education and healthcare. The relevant registration, professional, admission and coverage rules continue to apply. Confirm arrangements for each family member and do not assume universal free healthcare or automatic school admission.

Does the Golden Visa give me unrestricted residence across Europe?

No. Portuguese residence and short visits to other Schengen states are different rights. Other Schengen visits are generally limited to 90 days in any 180-day period; living or working in another country usually requires its own legal basis.

Must I invest the full qualifying amount in one fund?

A portfolio may use more than one qualifying fund where the structure and combined investment meet the legal requirements. MFG Consultants examines the rationale for each allocation, manager and exposure. Splitting capital across several funds does not itself guarantee diversification, returns or residence approval.

Is my capital protected because a fund qualifies for the Golden Visa?

No. Immigration eligibility does not guarantee capital, returns or liquidity. Examine the fund’s assets, leverage, governance, fees and exit conditions. The investment may remain committed longer than anticipated, and its maturity is separate from the immigration process.

What if I prefer a contribution to a fund investment?

The cultural route may fit that preference, subject to project and applicant eligibility. The contribution is non-refundable. Use our dedicated cultural-route page to understand the standard threshold, conditional low-density reduction, supporting evidence and additional costs.

Will a Golden Visa or a second home make me tax resident?

Neither label alone answers the question. Review your actual presence, whether a home is available and used as a habitual residence, applicable treaty provisions and home-country obligations. Staying below 183 days is not a universal exemption from Portuguese tax residence.

How long does approval take, and when can I exit an investment?

There is no single reliable timeline for every case. Government processing, document readiness and appointments affect the application. Investment exit depends on contractual terms and applicable immigration obligations. Plan these separately and obtain legal advice before reducing or ending a qualifying commitment.

How does MFG Consultants support me after the application?

We remain actively involved through updates, practical coordination and the ongoing services agreed for your case. Our support extends through your Golden Visa journey to permanent residence or citizenship and a passport, if that is your objective. The engagement defines responsibilities and services.
