Italy Investor Visa: Check the Innovative Startup Register

Before relying on Italy's innovative-startup investment route, verify the specific company's entry in the relevant special section of the Business Register. A technology business, an attractive startup profile and a recorded innovative-startup status are different things. You need to know which evidence supports the proposal and when it was checked.

Article 26-bis(1)(b), in the official legislative text hosted by MAECI, links the EUR 250,000 investment option to an innovative startup registered in that special section. The PDF is consolidated to 12 December 2025. The investment amount is not a complete budget or a substitute for the applicant's separate financial-resource and eligibility assessment. MFG's broader Italy Investor Visa guide provides the wider context.

Find the legal company behind the profile

Start with the full legal name and Italian tax identification details of the company receiving the proposed investment. Compare these with the records being offered as proof of startup status. A trading name, product or group website may refer to a different entity.

The official startup and innovative-SME portal offers company-name searches and distinguishes startups from innovative SMEs. Select the relevant category and reconcile the result with the legal recipient, rather than assuming that a similar name identifies the same business.

For example, a presentation might feature a product developed by a group while the proposed investment is in another group company. Ask which entity holds the claimed registration and how it relates to the recipient. A profile belonging to one company does not establish another company's status.

Separate the public profile from the filed confirmation

The portal presents pitches, sectors and business models. It is useful for finding the business and understanding what it says about itself. Save the date of your check and identify which information comes from that profile, which comes from register records and which remains a statement in a presentation.

The Business Register's maintenance guidance describes annual updating or confirmation of information and continued qualification. Its process separates updating the online profile from submitting the register filing and the legal representative's digitally signed declaration. A recently edited profile is therefore not the same evidence as that filing.

Ask the responsible Italian professional for a current register extract, or visura, and the relevant filed confirmation. Have them explain what those documents establish about the special-section entry, which period the declaration covers and whether anything remains pending. This is a request for an evidenced assessment, not a conclusion that every document you receive is sufficient.

Check the company's stage under the applicable rules

Do not build your decision around a generic claim that every startup keeps its status for a fixed number of years. Ask the company and its Italian professional which maintenance provisions apply to its actual history and current position.

MIMIT's Guide e moduli page, last modified on 28 May 2026, warns that Law 193/2024 changed the framework and that materials are being updated. It links an updated self-declaration document. Use that current source with professional advice, rather than an old form copied from a previous fundraising round.

Keep these dates separate:

  • When was the company incorporated?

  • When was it entered in the innovative-startup special section?

  • When were the profile and relevant register filing last updated?

  • When will the proposed investment and application steps occur?

Ask which declaration is applicable to the company's stage and whether a further filing or assessment will arise before the planned transaction. Those questions avoid treating incorporation, initial registration and continued qualification as one event. This article does not calculate a universal expiry or extension date.

Understand the limits of what the portal displays

On 30 October 2026, the official portal displayed a notice that new requirements applying from the third year, declared by the startup within its profile, would be available soon. It also described the profiles shown on the homepage as a subset recently updated.

That is a reason to obtain the underlying register evidence and an explanation of applicable requirements. It is not proof that a particular company lacks qualification, nor that every relevant declaration can already be evaluated from the visible profile alone.

If a search does not locate the expected company, check the legal name, category and identifiers with the reviewing professional. Ask for the appropriate current records and an explanation of any discrepancy. Avoid converting an unsuccessful name search into a legal decision, or accepting a screenshot as the complete answer to an unresolved mismatch.

Keep registration, the transaction and immigration assessment distinct

Even when the company and its registration are identified, the proposed investment still needs assessment. Ask the Italian professionals how the status evidence relates to the transaction and the stages of your application, including any expected change in the company's position. Do not assume a subsequent change has either no immigration effect or an automatic effect without that review.

Our company-investment due-diligence guide addresses the separate questions of what you would acquire, the business and exit arrangements. A register entry does not assess whether the price, rights or financial risk suit your household. Likewise, recognition as an innovative SME should not be substituted for the startup status specified for the reduced investment option.

Keep a short list of unresolved points with the document supporting each answer and the date it was checked. Identify who should refresh the assessment if the timetable changes. Do not present registration confirmation as an issued nulla osta, visa or residence permit.

Bring dated evidence to an Italy consultation

MFG Consultants publishes an Italy Investor Visa guide and provides an individual enquiry channel. Discuss your Italy plans with MFG, identifying the recipient company, proposed route, status evidence and questions still open. Agree the advisory work and which Italian professionals will assess company status, the investment and immigration requirements.

An enquiry does not appoint MFG to certify a company's registration or determine an application. Investor residence, permanent residence and citizenship remain separate assessments; registration evidence does not guarantee approval, capital recovery or a passport.

Sources checked on 30 October 2026. The MAECI consolidation and MIMIT page dates are stated above. The discussion distinguishes observed portal information from the individual legal and investment assessments still required.
